Background of the Study
Regional disparities in Nigeria have long been a critical area of concern, significantly influencing the overall social welfare of its citizens. Social welfare, encompassing healthcare, education, housing, and income distribution, is often unevenly distributed across regions. Historical, political, and economic factors have contributed to stark contrasts in living standards, with some regions boasting advanced infrastructure and high-quality services while others struggle with chronic underinvestment (Adeniran, 2023). Such disparities not only hinder economic growth but also exacerbate social exclusion and inequality (Chukwu, 2024).
In regions with robust economic infrastructures, social welfare indicators such as literacy rates, life expectancy, and employment levels are generally higher. Conversely, underdeveloped regions suffer from poor access to quality education, inadequate healthcare services, and limited employment opportunities (Okafor, 2025). These imbalances create a cycle of poverty and deprivation, further entrenching regional inequalities. Recent studies emphasize that addressing these disparities is essential for achieving equitable development and social justice. Equitable resource distribution and tailored policy interventions are necessary to uplift marginalized regions and enhance overall social welfare (Nwankwo, 2023).
Moreover, social welfare programs must be designed to account for regional peculiarities and the unique challenges faced by different communities. The interplay between regional economic disparities and social welfare outcomes calls for a comprehensive analysis to identify the underlying causes and develop effective strategies. This study critically examines how regional disparities affect social welfare in Nigeria, focusing on resource allocation, policy efficacy, and the role of government interventions in mitigating inequality.
Statement of the Problem
Despite numerous initiatives aimed at improving social welfare, regional disparities in Nigeria persist, leading to significant challenges in achieving equitable development. Many underdeveloped regions continue to face inadequate public services, limited access to quality education and healthcare, and poor infrastructure—all of which contribute to persistent poverty and social exclusion (Ibrahim, 2023). The uneven distribution of resources has created a scenario where some regions enjoy relatively high standards of living, while others struggle to meet basic needs, deepening social inequalities.
These disparities not only affect individual well-being but also have broader implications for national cohesion and sustainable development. Social welfare programs are frequently undermined by systemic issues such as corruption, inefficient resource management, and poor coordination between federal and regional authorities (Uche, 2024). This disconnect results in policies that fail to address the specific needs of marginalized communities, perpetuating cycles of deprivation. In addition, the lack of reliable data on regional social welfare outcomes hampers the development of targeted, effective interventions. The continued neglect of underdeveloped regions threatens to exacerbate social tensions and hinder overall economic progress.
